Summer means more opportunities to get outside with your Biewer Terrier, whether you are taking a walk around the neighborhood, spending time in the backyard, or heading out for a family adventure. But when temperatures rise, hot pavement and other outdoor surfaces can become uncomfortable or even dangerous for your puppy’s paws.
Biewers may be small, but they are curious, playful companions who enjoy exploring. Taking a few precautions can help protect those little paws while allowing your puppy to safely enjoy the summer months.
Avoid Walking on Hot Pavement
As the summer sun heats sidewalks, asphalt, and other surfaces, they can become much hotter than the surrounding air. A sidewalk that seems fine to you may be uncomfortable for your puppy’s sensitive paw pads.
Whenever possible, plan walks for the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening. Choose shaded routes and grassy areas when available.
Before heading out, you can also place the back of your hand against the pavement for several seconds. If the surface feels too hot to comfortably keep your hand there, choose a cooler place or wait until later for your walk.
Check Your Puppy’s Paws After Outdoor Adventures
Make paw checks part of your summer routine. After walks and outdoor play, look for redness, irritation, cracks, cuts, or anything stuck between the paw pads.
Your puppy may also tell you something is wrong through their behavior. Limping, licking or chewing the paws, reluctance to walk, or suddenly stopping during a walk can all indicate discomfort.
If you notice a burn, significant injury, or ongoing irritation, contact your veterinarian for guidance rather than trying to treat a serious paw injury yourself.
